November 2023:

The sixth award ceremony of the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library (AMRL) Book Prize for an unpublished Hausa manuscript took place at the GI premises in Kaduna on the 23rd of November 2023. Congratulations to Hauwa Shehu (1st prize) for Harin Gajimare, Rukkayya Ibrahim Lawal (2nd prize) for Wata Duniya, and Fatima Sani (3rd prize) for Amanatun Amana. A very special word of thanks also to the judges, Hajiyah Aisha Shehu Tijjani, Malama Bilki Sani Lawan, Hajiya Jamila Abdullahi Muhammad and Malam Mustapha Salisu. The Emir of Kano was the special guest of honour.

December 2022:

The fifth award ceremony of the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library (AMRL) Book Prize for an unpublished Hausa manuscript took place at the GI premises in Kaduna on the 30th of November 2022. Congratulations to Bilkisu Muhammad Garkuwa (1st prize), Hajara Ahmad Hussain (2nd prize), and Muttaka A. Hassan (3rd prize). A very special word of thanks also to the judges, Malama Faiza Muhammad, Hajiya Bilkisu Ibrahim, Mal. Jibrin Adamu Jibrin, Malama Hindatu Sheikh Usman, and Prof. Yusuf Adamu.

December 2021:

The fourth award ceremony of the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library (AMRL) Book Prize for an unpublished Hausa manuscript took place at the GI premises in Kaduna on the 1st of December 2021. Congratulations to Hassana Suleiman Isma’il (1st prize), Ibrahim Yahaya Shehu (2nd prize), and Mubarak Idris Abubakar (3rd prize). A very special word of thanks also to the judges, Dr. Bashir Hadi Ashara, Mal. Mustapha Muhammad Abdulhadi, Haj. Harira Idris Umar, Haj. Umma Muhammad Hassan, and Haj. Zainab Ibrahim Abubakar.

His Highness, Amb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, the Emir of Zazzau was the special guest of honour. His attendance elevated the event, and he eloquently spoke on ‘The Importance of Hausa Literary Works for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage’.

December 2020:

The third award ceremony of the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library Book Prize for an unpublished Hausa manuscript took place at the GI premises in Kaduna on the 18th of December 2020. Congratulations to Jibrin Adamu Jibrin (1st prize) for Dama Sun Fada MinLantana Ja’afar (2nd prize) for Illar Almajiranci, and Zulaihat Sani Kagara (3rd prize) for Dan Waye?

A very special word of thanks also to the three judges, Mal. Zubairu Abdullahi Sada, Hajiya Halima K. Mashi, and Mal. Ziya’ulhaq Yusuf, who also assisted with the editing processes.

September 2019:

The second award ceremony of the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library Book Prize for an unpublished Hausa manuscript took place at the GI premises in Kaduna on the 24th of September 2019. Congratulations to Abdullahi Hassan Yarima (1st prize), Zaharadden Ibrahim Kalla (2nd prize) and Ado Bala Abubakar (3rd prize). September 2019:

Conference on “Effective Policing Strategies for Nigeria” hosted on the 19th of September 2019 at the Sheraton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria. The keynote speaker was IG Roopa D. Moudgil from the Indian Police Service.

September 2018:

The GI hosted a screening of a documentary film produced by the Yar’Adua Foundation at the Institute’s Kaduna premises on the 11th of September 2018. The film, “Swallow: Food Security in Nigeria’s Changing Climate” is a sequel to the award-winning documentary “Nowhere to Run: Nigeria’s Climate and Environmental Crisis”. This latest film addresses the issue of food security in Nigeria brought on in part by the changing climate, inadequate infrastructure and traditional agricultural practices. The documentary features inspiring stories and explores opportunities and solutions to Nigeria’s food security challenge.

July 2018:

A NEW ERA FOR CHINA-AFRICA COOPERATION: PARTNERSHIP FOR PEACE, SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT

March 2018:

The GI received another container with books from the US at the end of 2017. After selecting the books that were useful to the Aliyu Mohammed Research Library, the remainder was divided into 74 donations comprising 19,218 books that have since been donated to schools, tertiary institutions and community organisations in Nigeria. This is the 4th donation of its kind, bringing the total of books donated by the GI since 2011 to date to about 60,000.

March 2018:

Ishmael Beah, renowned Sierra Leonean author, spent two weeks in residence at the Gusau Institute from 5-18 March 2018 to work on his most recent book. During his stay, he also hosted a creative writing workshop for aspiring young writers, and addressed school groups on topical issues.

July 2017:

Gen Gusau participated in the African Peace and Security Annual Conference (APSACO) that held from 10 to 11 July 2017 in Rabat, Morocco. The conference was organised by the OCP Policy Center and Gen Gusau delivered a speech on ‘Collective Security in Africa’.

July 2017:

The GI, together with the Kaduna State Government and the Book Buzz Foundation, hosted the maiden Kaduna Book and Arts Festival (Kabafest) from 5-8 July 2017 at the GI Head Office in Kaduna. The programme included panel discussions on topical issues, book discussions with authors, an art exhibition, on-site book shop, music concert, and more. The guest of honour was the world-renowned Muslim woman author from Sudan, Ms Leila Aboulela.

February 2016:

Handing Over Ceremony of 37 Book Donations comprising 15,000 volumes to schools, universities and public libraries. This is the 3rd donation of its kind, bringing the total of books donated by the GI since 2011 to date to about 40,000.
